Can You Hear Me?

Australian Workers Film Guide

Summary

Commissioned by the Joint Coal Board, this training film addresses the issue of industrial noise deafness in the coal industry.  This film shows excessive noise generated by industry and modern life, featuring a miner called Matt, who we see suffering from the effects of deafness in the workplace, at home and in society.  We see Matt struggling to hear warnings of danger, hear family conversations and even the television, as well as interacting with friends and staff in the local pub.  Animated diagrams of how the ear works and suffers hearing loss are mixed with the live action. We see Matt undergo a hearing check where he discovers that he has lost a large portion of his hearing and that it can never be regained.
